Counseling Adolescents About Sexual Health - Catherine Stevens-Simon, MD, and Richard L. Street, PhD

This monograph reviews the counseling theories and techniques that are particularly suitable for adolescent patients; discuss adolescent development and provide examples to illustrate how to counsel this special population about overall reproductive health, partner selection, and the prevention of pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections in a manner that meets their developmental needs. Drs. Stevens-Simon and Street also offer an example of how to manage the most perplexing diagnostic and therapeutic challenge of those who care for adolescents: the non-contracepting, sexually active young woman who says she does not want to become pregnant "anytime soon."

In addition to providing recommendations for a structured 30- to 45-minute initial gynecologic health visit, this monograph addresses adolescent development, patient confidentiality, parental involvement in decision making, sexual history, risky behaviors related to reproductive health (e.g., unprotected sex with risk for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections), substance abuse (e.g., alcohol and cigarettes), and contraceptive options.
