A woman’s contraceptive choice is influenced by her beliefs, behaviors, concern, and knowledge of appropriate and effective use of specific contraception methods. This case reviews the considerations a clinician might have when counseling a patient who has heavy periods.

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

• To use the medical eligibility criteria of the World Health Organization for determining unacceptable health risks that may prevent the provision of a contraceptive method

• To determine counseling priorities when the patient has a range of complex issues that may influence the selection of a contraceptive method

• To counsel for myths and misunderstanding regarding menstrual suppression

This CME activity is designed to meet the educational needs of OB/GYN physicians, family physicians, internists, pediatricians, nurse practitioners, and other heath care providers involved in women’s health issues.
